November News
November came and went without a blink! I can not believe how quickly the school year is moving along. It was also great to be able to meet with so many of you during this month to discuss your child. Thank you for making the time to come out. On 11/11 We took sometime to talk about Veterans and honor them at our school with a slide show, songs and treats for the veterans to enjoy. Thank-you veterans!!
During the month of November we focused on being thankful and how life was long ago. We had many activities, read many books and even had an in house field trip from the American Independence Museum, out of Exeter NH. The children were able to see first hand how the people 300 years ago looked, how they dressed, how they spoke and what toys and or tools they would have had during that time period. This helped to tie in all things related to Thanksgiving. We spent a great deal of time learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans surrounding how the first Thanksgiving came to be. We also worked with Mrs. McQeeney's classroom to "weave" placemats to use at our first grade Friendsgiving Feast. Of course the month wouldn't be complete with out a STEM challenge. This month the students were given 2 challenges, one to create a dinner table and the other, a turkey hide out! The students needed to collaborate and communicate with each other in order for their challenge to be successful, which they were! We also spent time writing about what we are thankful for and what it means to truly be thankful. We created a feather for our class turkey, cut and created a turkey with writing about what we are thankful for. We also sang a very funny turkey song, Albuquerque The Turkey that the students wanted to sing over and over!
We are moving right along with Fundations and all the new skills being taught! The students are becoming more and more successful confident readers, spellers and writers! We have introduced bonus letters (f. l.s z) as the end of a one syllable word, as well as our glued sound -all and are moving into more glued sounds of -an & -am. In math the students are becoming more secure with foundational skills which is going to allow us to really pick up the pace when we return in the new year.
